In the Emergency Medicine Service Line, we’ve always believed that ultrasound belongs in the hands of every emergency clinician—at the bedside, in real time, shaping decisions when seconds count. But belief alone isn’t enough; high-quality, accessible training is what turns that belief into practice. That vision has driven the growth of our EM Ultrasound Educational Committee, a team committed to building a culture where POCUS isn’t “nice to have”—it’s part of the DNA of emergency care.
In true FOAMed spirit, our strategy is simple: open access, high-yield, clinically relevant learning. We draw from the best global resources—Life in the Fast Lane, ACEM’s free ultrasound e-learning platform, international guidelines, and every FOAMed gem that helps clinicians make safer, smarter decisions at 3 a.m.
And we don’t stay confined to the ED. Ultrasound faculty from our committee actively teach across the healthcare cluster, delivering:
• POCUS use long term care facility within the cluster
• Ultrasound applications in nephrology, integrated into CRRT courses
• Focused EM ultrasound workshops and hands-on scanning sessions
• Peripheral IV access courses
A major leap forward came in 2025, when we launched a designated ultrasound rotation for R1 EM residents. With dedicated scanning shifts and direct faculty supervision, the rotation builds confidence early and establishes solid POCUS fundamentals. It has quickly become the backbone of our ultrasound education pathway.
